Want to know what sci-fi-inspired underground hip-hop was like back in the mid-'90s? You don't have to hack autonomous computers sending shooters back in time at the behest of defunct message boards. Atoms Family's Cryptic One dug up a grip of his group Centa of da Web's Beyond Human Comprehension cassettes and CDs, and posted them on his site. You can also name your price below.

Recorded, I believe, in Da Cryptic One's parents' house, this EP sounds like decades of hip-hop's past and future folding in on themselves in a Westbury basement. Peace to Cryp, Molecule and Whichcraft for opening the portal.

PIRATA - "Davey Jones Locker"

Pirata is the duo of Atoms Family veterans Cryptic One on the mic and Jestoneart on the beats. It's also the name of an upcoming album from the duo, which you can get on CD for free — yes, FREE (plus shipping) — just by signing up for Cryptic One's mailing list. In addition to his works with NYC undeground rap royalty (such as fellow Atoms Familyman Vordul Mega, who makes a guest appearance in this video) and his many solo efforts as both rapper and producer, you might recognize Cryptic One from LongIslandRap.Comp v4. As for Jestoneart, if you haven't heard TheParadoxicalState, fix your life.

Cryptic One - The World According 2

Cryptic One stays busy. When he's not dropping a new beat and accompanying video every goddamn day, he's churning out chunes with fellow Atoms Family kinsman Alaska as IT, digging out Vordul Mega's Verses From a Vault, curating his own greatest hits compilation, or most recently, dropping EPs from his scheduled-four-part World According series.

The first, World According..., came out in September. The second, the aptly titled World According 2, arrived Friday. Stream the video for track one below and click "hear more" for the rest.

The World According To... - Cryptic One

Some of us create our best work sporadically, letting lightning strike when and where it will, as it were. We reason that you can't summon inspiration or force creativity ... And some of us are either too old for that shit, or just plain don't work like that. We regiment our art, making it an indispensable part of our daily routines, because that's the only way it'll ever get done.

Don't know Cryptic One personally, so can't speak to it definitively, but he certainly comes across as someone from the second category. Following his Beat a Day and Verse a Day series, he now drops the first EP "in a 4 part series of smaller releases to drop between full on releases." Short, on and to the point.

Cryptic One - BEATADAY 2 Trailer

If you know the name Cryptic One, it's most likely as a member of the legendary NYC crew Atoms Family. What you might not realize is that Cryptic One actually spent most of his life in Westbury, having grown up just down the block from the Westbury Drive-In Movie Theatre. No word on how, or if, his experiences sneaking into flicks there inspired the visuals of his BEATADAY series. For the uninitiated, BEATADAY features Cryptic One producing one beat per day for 100 days and posting each to his Instagram account with a 15-second video. The second installment, which you can preview below, starts Monday August 10. Until then, visit CrypticOne.net to check out the original series, as well as his Cryptstrumentals and other music.
